Rocktober v2.011a
Posted by gunsella in Uncategorized on October 19th, 2011
The remainder of Rocktober is looking pretty exciting. On Friday night Three Chord Truth brings us a ‘Bossa Nova and Samba Party’ at Brown Sugar in Xintiandi. This party features an apparent legend of Brazilian music, Toninho Horta. He didn’t invent Bossanova but from the praise of Pat Metheny, it sounds like he’s amongst the giants of the style. Metheny says “I’ve often described him to other musicians as the Herbie Hancock of bossa nova guitarists.” There’s gonna be a full samba band and hot dancers. It’s 120RMB on the door – see you there.

And on Saturday night, the real excitement begins. It’s another gig from my band, The Illumin8tors. We will be in the support slot at the next installment of Trash-a-Gogo at Yuyintang – headliners are The Fadeaways from Japan. The other support is former Beat Bandits’ Toshi’s new band, The Macaronians. The Illumin8tors will not be performing our whole show – we only have a 30 minute slot. But you will be hearing a bunch of the tunes and maybe even seeing some sexy choreography.

Fear not, for the following night, Sunday 23rd, we will be performing the first (almost) full presentation of Solar/Lunar: The Legend at Logo. There will be singing, dancing, capoeira, costumes, sitars, masks, stories, the whole she-bang. It’s free and it’s something of a warm up for the big gig coming up in November at Mao. Come on down, you will be entertained.

It’s been a pretty solid month already, with The Vasco Era and Fever Machine and Friends at Yuyintang, as well as a free Jagermeifter show at Mao last Friday featuring Triple Smash, Pairs and Friend or Foe. Friend or Foe’s outfits have been getting increasingly erratic of late. I just don’t know where they can go from here. Photo courtesy of Fish Zhao.

The awesome continues this week with another two gigs at Yuyintang and a real “Last Shout” at LOgO. First up we have American troubadour and multi-instrumentalist, Daniel Hart, at Yuyintang this Thursday 28th. He has a quirky, left-field kinda sound that you’d expect from someone who lists The Polyphonic Spree and St. Vincent as acts to which he offers sonic contributions. In describing his music, I could use Of Montreal as a starting point, and throw in some Sufjan Stevens for good measure. I’m not sure what kind of show he is bringing with him but I am sure it will be enjoyable. If you want to hear some of his music you can check his myspace and douban. 40 RMB.

On Saturday 30th it’s the one you’ve all been waiting for. As a Halloween celebration four of our favourite bands are getting dressed up and presenting tribute sets by acts with some historical significance for rock music.

Pairs as Wham!, X is Y (plus members of Moon Tyrant and Rainbow Danger Club) as Joy Division, Boys Climbing Ropes as The Misfits and The Fever Machine (plus me) as KISS. No, no, it just doesn’t get any better. And if that wasn’t enough for you, after that there’s a Toshi-sponsored Trash-a-Gogo on at LOgO featuring The Dudettes along with Friend or Foe, and Japanese trash-garage-surf-rock 3-piece, The Paralyz (they will also be on at Yuyintang on the 29th). Though LOgO is officially closing on the 31st, I have strong feeling that this show will be the last blow-out for LOgO.
We’ll miss you. So many good times. So many lost nights.

This week is undoubtedly the biggest week for the Trash-A-Gogo series of parties since their inception. Brand mastermind, Toshi, has booked Japanese surf rock band, The Whys, at three gigs at three different locations with three different lineups.
Wednesday night sees The Whys paired up with Toshi’s own band, The Beat Bandits, for a very 60s infused night of psychedelia and short grass skirts at Yuyintang
Thursday sees The Whys and The Beat Bandits on the bill with two Luwanrock favourites: Hotter Than Teppanyaki and The Dudettes. Somehow I seem to have become a full-time member of each of those two bands. I have no idea how that happened. Regardless it will be all about zeitgeist and parochialism as we sing your world back to you. Check out the new Dudettes song, We’re Still Here. Also be sure to check out a choice new cover from a certain 70s all-girl teenage rock band. I c-c-c-can’t wait.
Friday’s gig is at 696 Livehouse in Hongkou and features the terribly friendly Pairs. If you haven’t already heard, they have a new album out and you can pick up a copy there. It’s the latest release from Luwanrock Studios via Qu Records and it features the hits Yangpu Qu and I Spend My Birthday With a Bunch of Cunts as well as five other great tracks. By the way, if you can’t wait ’til Friday you can grab it for free here: http://pairs.bandcamp.com/ But I must say, I like the packaging they have gone for with the hard copy.
