Acid Ponies @ Lune / The Dudettes’ Last Last Last Shout

It’s shaping up to be another big weekend of music in Shanghai. First up on Friday night is A Very Pony  Birthday @ Lune, proudly brought to you by Double Down Productions, a new player on the promotions scene, but led by the ubiquitous Rabshakeh of Friend or Foe who, remarkably, is not playing at this inaugural event.

That’s not to say that it won’t be entertaining though. As you can see on the flyer above, there will be a live set from the Acid Pony Club as well as a hybrid experiment involving the Acid Pony Club and Death to Giants, known collectively as Death to Ponies. Other performers include Beijing based  Thruoutin, who will give us his unique mixture of funky beats, traditional Chinese instruments and vocals, as well as fellow Beijinger,  LowBow, who is not afraid to get down and lo-fi with a bunch of guitar pedals and a 3-string guitar. And everyone’s favourite wolf on heat will close down the night.

All of this is in aid of celebrating the birthday of Laura Ingalls from Acid Pony Club. He’s the one with the beard. In honour of his formidable facial hair, anyone with a beard gets in for free – male or female. Or shemale.

But don’t stay out too late, kids. The next day The Dudettes are putting on an all-day festival at Yuyintang. This really is their last shout – not like a year ago when Anita left the country and the band unexpectedly rose(s) like a phoenix out of it’s own ashes. This time it’s for real – two of the remaining three members are leaving. Goodbye Fierce. Goodbye Sohpia. You will be missed XXXXXX

Anyway, full lineup details here. There’s entertainment all day, from 2pm to 4am.

Wuhan Petram Urbem

The Wuhan express rolled in at 4 in the afternoon and the bands went straight to sound check while the rest of the entourage went on a beer check. Beer? Check.

The evening kicked off with an ‘acoustic’ set by math-rockers, X is Y. With their drummer unable to make it, they used a Casiotone for the beats, expertly played by regular bassist, Yajing, who also handled acoustic percussion duties like a pro. Their set was powerful despite the absence of a live drummer as G sweated through some very emotional quadratic equations and binomials put to song.

They were followed by The Dudettes in one of their last appearances ever. We relived some of the good old days on stage as I joined them for a couple of Dudette staples, I am, You Are and Move Move Text Text. The ladies even prepared a song for the local audience – Woohan, Woohoohan (referencing a 5, 6, 7, 8′s song). Don’t forget about The Dudettes Festival next weekend at Yuyintang – it’s your last ever opportunity to see them perform live. It also provides an opportunity to drink cheap Japanese beer in a park with live music going all day.

Next up was Stegosaurus? who put in a very strong performance, full of their usual humour and melodiousness. Their set included old favourites such as Qingwen and High and Low as well as a few upcoming tunes including the Shanghianese Nong Naozi.

Their set was followed by a typical brilliant set by The Rainbow Danger Club. I have nothing to add about this awesome band.

The real winner of the night was Moon Tyrant. They brought it. Great show, guys.

Well done to VJ Tina Spangles and DJ BO for keeping the room entertained all evening with visuals and antics respectively. Wuhan rocks. Ity.

The Final Chapter . . ?

Now The Dudettes were unstoppable. A mere three weeks after the Roller Revival party, they returned to Logo. They had undergone one more line-up change, losing Ethel and becoming the tight-knit four-piece they are today. Also appearing that night at the Mod Dance Party was Pairs, whose drummer, Xiao Zhong, sat in on drums for them.

Their performance that night was easily their best yet, they had some moves, some props and very few lyric sheets. And tambourines and feather boas. Above we can see Roses, Sophia, Anita and Ms. Fierce.

Here are some of their predictions for 2010 in Shanghai:

Nothing is open, all bars close down
Those with F-visas run out of town

All live music will be canned
Street pajamas will be banned.

And some reflections on the disappearance of google:

You know I’m not a geek
But I’ve got five different proxies
Just to check friends requests
That seems a bit much-ee

What did you do when your Google had vanished?
When the powers that be had had it banished
Where did it go? Where did it go now?
I just wanna know, P.R.C., where did it go?

The next show was just last Tuesday 15th at the Dragon Boat Festival gig at Yuyintang. Also on the bill was Rainbow Danger Club, Break for Borneo and Throutin. For this show they painted their faces to represent a country competing in the World Cup. This was right on theme with their new song, Roadtrippin’. Zack Borneo played drums, I played guitar and the ladies were just awesome.

Get ready for some Dudettes action tomorrow afternoon at the Expo, and then the last show, Friday night at Logo. Don’t even think about missing it: Pairs is also on the bill alongside Friend or Foe, a re-incarnated Hotter than Teppanyaki and The Beat Bandits. It’s all free, and any money they do make is going towards a new drum kit for Logo.

New Lineup, New Material

Sadly, just as The Dudettes were just beginning their rise to infamy, Emily returned to her native U.S.A. The Dudettes decided to continue despite this setback. They made an appearance at The Shanghai Studio with a new member, Ethel Merman. L-R Anita, Ethel, Sophia, Roses

Not long after this, the new line up and new outfits were complete. On May 14th 2010 at the event, Even Better Than Roller Revival, the new five-piece was unveiled: Anita Schwanz and The Dudettes.

From left: we can see Anita with some of that new, sparkly material; Ms. Fierce, ready to do battle with the skaters; Ethel can’t wait to skate; Roses and Sophia look pretty eager to flash those red cards.

It was around this time that their material developed to cover such topics as catching a taxi. Here’s an excerpt from their song, Ting at the Lukou

Now we tinged at tjhe lukou, it’s time to pay

He says, “Xianjin?” I say, “I yao ka today”

But it’s too fuckin’ late, he’s flipped the meter up

He’s got a fake 50 and no lingqian in his cup

My bitches are waiting, I gotta get out

So I throw him a 20 and he starts to shout

You can look forward to more new material at their final show, this Friday at Logo. The circle of life continues, sometimes endings can lead to new beginnings. Also appearing on the bill this Friday is a new band, Friend or Foe, in their first appearance. It promises to be quite interesting – another great guitar/drums duo featuring **********************************.

A Meteoric Rise

The Dudettes’ first show was at Logo on May 16th. Their second show, on June 5th, was at The British Bulldog as part of a Talent Quest organised by Zuloo, a local theater group. When they performed all three of their songs, H1N1, Facebook Stalker and Shopping in China, the judges were unanimous in awarding them the first prize.

This is the original line-up of The Dudettes. On the left is Roses. Next to her, with the heart-shaped glasses, is Emily. Next is Sophia von Schakopolous. Finally, on the right, is Anita Schwanz.

Here they are again, this time at Yuyintang for the occasion of Joris’ (The Dropkicks) farewell. It looks like Shopping in China (just pick up the phone).

Sophia von Schakopolous was also a member of another high profile group from last year: Hotter than Teppanyaki. Here you can see members of HTT, The Snotskicks with The Dudettes performing Sakebomb.

Don’t forget to come and see The Dudettes for their final show, this Friday at Logo. Also, Hotter Than Teppanyaki is reforming especially for the night,  featuring me playing Helena.

NEWS FLASH: The Dudettes will be performing at the Expo this Thursday 24th June. If you want to join the mayhem, just leave a message here, and The Dudettes will find you.
