there’s gonna be some fresh recorded material hitting shanghai in the not too distant future – the dovetail joints returned to the studio last week to put some vocals down on some tracks we started a few weeks ago . this time we went to davide’s studio in a cute little building on wukang lu. the aim was to get all of sandro’s parts down as he was leaving. he has now left and we here at dtj central are quite sad. and without a bass player… but we did get all his vocals down.
and the rogue transmission took the first steps towards our next recording on the weekend. we went to kim’s studio where dtjs recorded a few weeks ago. it’s a great space and really well suited to recording bands. there’s a good sized live room and a comfy control room.
we hired a super cool fender bassman for the recording. this is truly where the rock comes from.
doesn’t it look great with my telecaster.
here’s me and john putting down an overdub.
fabs looking very at ease.
and this is the nice preamp that kim has in his studio.
Second best band in Shanghai. Next year for sure

the rogue transmission cleaned up at last month’s city weekend reader’s choice awards 2009 . we won awards in all the categories that we were nominated for – namely best band in shanghai. the coveted top position went to banana monkey . congrats, fellas. second isn’t a terrible place to be. i think it gives us an opportunity to reflect on the past year and think how we can be more “rock n roll” in the coming 12 months. next year the top spot will be ours. you heard it here first.
congratulations also to M1NT for collecting at least five awards including runner up for best toilets. well done, guys. all that hard work paid off.

man, last night was sick. all the work we did in preparing some of our rockin material for acoustic guitars really paid off. we played really well. the crowd really dug what we did. it was a great night.
if you’re not sure what the hell i am talking about, my band, the rogue transmission, played an intimate show last night at anar bar on xingfu lu. we billed it as an evening with the rogue transmission. the original idea was to approach like the old MTV unplugged series. so we stripped down our tunes, slowed some of them down a little, some of them a lot, and we gave a few of them a bit of the psychedelic treatment:
apathetic mutation is always a crowd favourite, probably due to its catchy chorus (oooooooooooooooh). we slowed that one down and gave it a little country vibe. wicked devil heart stayed about the same speed but we gave it the old train feel (

). one of my favourites was firecracker cherrypop. it’s an older number that was starting to lose its lustre. so we gave it the power-ballad treatment and ended up bearing a strange likeness to

. not bad.
anyway, let’s get on with the pics. ben botiller of the snotrockets and the dropkicks supported us with a ‘folk’ set. i think that means that he played acoustic guitar. he’s really good – i’ve never heard him sing like that before. when he sings in the snots it’s all a lot faster and louder and… less ‘folky’.
we decided to dress nice for the occaision
for our second set we went electric and played a good old fashioned rock set.
the crowd really enjoyed themselves. what’s up, mache!
our pedals always come up good in photos. i’m such a gear-geek. these are dan’s.
and these are mine.
big thanks to dave, estel and roses for taking the photos.

this weekend was the may day long weekend and the rogue transmission took our brand of rock to beijing. on friday night we played at D-22 as part of their 3rd anniversary celebrations. the carsick cars headlined – the gar (who we played with last weekend at get in the van) and offset: spectacles were also on the bill. we really killed it. i think that means we played exceptionally well. we had only 35 minutes and we used our time really well. the place was packed and well… it just awesome.
here is the poster for the D-22 long weekend of rock.
can you spot fry from futurama?
offset: spectacles were odd. they didn’t have a drummer. they didn’t seem to have any songs. and they didn’t really have very much presence either. the three of them stood in a loose circle on the stage – the singer with his back to the audience. strangely they did have great equipment though – two vox AC30s and big ol’ bad-ass vox bass amp.
the carsick cars were on top form. the place was totally rammed and the vibe was excellent.
the last song of the night was their hit – zhong nan hai (???). right on cue the cigarettes started flying. zhong nan hai, as well as being the name of the compound where the chinese leadership lives (?), it is also a popular brand of cigarettes.
check out the mess. and some nice pedals.
here’s me with my mate, liu liu, from the band demerit . he’s got a cool new pirate tattoo on his arm and a swallow on his neck.
it was a late night and then an afternoon bullet train to tianjin, just half an hour away.
tianjin is really nice. the wasn’t any construction. little noise. it looked pleasant. it looked finished, unlike so many chinese cities.the hotel we stayed in had very low ceilings. just like in being john malkovich.
OG flav
we played at a new club there called NiC club, owned by the awesome song ping. technical difficulties aside, it was a great night. we headlined to about thirty people. we played like it was 300. after the show the party really got started as we jammed all night with song ping and his mates. it was a lot of fun. tianjin rock city!
the rouge transmission?
highlights of the trip?

saturday night was get in the van III held at the zhijiang dream factory with an after party at yuyintang where boys climbing ropes played. there were four bands at the first venue. first on was the dropkicks, followed by my other band, the rogue transmission. after were two bands from beijing – 24 hours and the gar.
there are some great pics on web2asia’s flickr stream . i managed to nick some thumbnails.
this one’s from catlin:
the dropkicks are cool. i played with them two weeks ago at live bar (with the dtjs)
and this is the last moment of live music that night at the dream factory. this is the lead dude from the gar throwing his guitar into the amp. it then toppled off the back of the stage.
and off to beijing tomorrow for a show at D-22 with the carsick cars. sick

what are the people saying?
