November is Friend or Foe month

My Claw is Never Limp is the new album by Friend or Foe and it’s coming out next week. Rabshakeh, Manhadan and Bill II are really excited about it – so excited that they’ve decided to share a track with you before the actual release. Luwanrock is very proud to present track 2 off the new record – Lie to Me. Just hit the Play arrow on the player below.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As you’re probably aware by now, the album was co-produced by the Acid Pony Club and Nichols from Rainbow Danger Club. They’ve all worked really closely to bring you a simply awesome sounding disc. And it looks good too – the graphics have all been hand drawn by Ivan Belcic of Moon Tyrant. Here’s a little teaser of the artwork:

So if you can’t wait until the official launch party on the 12th of this month, there’s a listening party at Dada tomorrow night. Here are the flyers for both:

The Week in Rock (and Afro-Reggae-Funk-Soul)

First up on Friday night at YYT is rocking bill – It’s Moon Tyrant along with Loudspeaker and Fearless in a rarely seen acoustic mode. It’s 25 kuai and set to kick off at 9.30. It should be good. Check the smoking cat poster for all the details.

And the gig that I’m really excited about this week (sorry, Ivan) is at YYT on Saturday night – it’s a one-time-only reunion of The Georgia Sam Blues Band. This band was a mainstay of the Shanghai scene back when YYT was in a shed somewhere south of Xujiahui, Tanghui occupied the location of the old Logo, and the site of Anar wasn’t yet Pirates or Shuffle Bar. Needless to say, Dada and  Shelter didn’t even exist.

The Georgia Sam Blues Band was the brain-child of old-China-hand, Rindy Portfolio, and featured all future members of my old band, The Cardinals, as well as three quarters of The Dovetail Joints. Did I steal his band away? Probably. Was he bitter about it? Hell no, in fact, I’ve been invited to reprise my role with them as we rip through two sets of shit-hot blues rock which, let’s face it, Shanghai just doesn’t have enough of. There’s some tasty Zeppelin and Stones covers, as well as bunch of originals. And there’s the added bonus of the fully sick support act – Noukilla. These guys are mostly Mauritian and led by the very talented Mauritian, Gilbert K. They sing in at least three languages and they blend genres like a master chef blends chipotle and catfish.

Here’s the poster.

I hope you can make it.

Wuhan Petram Urbem

The Wuhan express rolled in at 4 in the afternoon and the bands went straight to sound check while the rest of the entourage went on a beer check. Beer? Check.

The evening kicked off with an ‘acoustic’ set by math-rockers, X is Y. With their drummer unable to make it, they used a Casiotone for the beats, expertly played by regular bassist, Yajing, who also handled acoustic percussion duties like a pro. Their set was powerful despite the absence of a live drummer as G sweated through some very emotional quadratic equations and binomials put to song.

They were followed by The Dudettes in one of their last appearances ever. We relived some of the good old days on stage as I joined them for a couple of Dudette staples, I am, You Are and Move Move Text Text. The ladies even prepared a song for the local audience – Woohan, Woohoohan (referencing a 5, 6, 7, 8′s song). Don’t forget about The Dudettes Festival next weekend at Yuyintang – it’s your last ever opportunity to see them perform live. It also provides an opportunity to drink cheap Japanese beer in a park with live music going all day.

Next up was Stegosaurus? who put in a very strong performance, full of their usual humour and melodiousness. Their set included old favourites such as Qingwen and High and Low as well as a few upcoming tunes including the Shanghianese Nong Naozi.

Their set was followed by a typical brilliant set by The Rainbow Danger Club. I have nothing to add about this awesome band.

Rainbow Danger Club

The real winner of the night was Moon Tyrant. They brought it. Great show, guys.

Well done to VJ Tina Spangles and DJ BO for keeping the room entertained all evening with visuals and antics respectively. Wuhan rocks. Ity.

Album crazy

Apologies for the lack of posts recently. It seems that most of my time these days is spent either attending album launches or ensuring that the album to be launched makes it to said launch.

Rainbow Danger Club’s new album, Where Maps End (download here), left the Luwan Rock mastering suite in late February and was released unto the world a few weeks later with a great show at Live Bar. I was doing sound that evening and I received some compliments but honestly I didn’t do very much. Most of the EQ knobs (the green ones) spent the evening turned to the left – anything else produced feedback. You can see it in the only photo I took that evening. The idea is that you photograph the desk or write down the settings as they change between the bands. I just stood back and let the bands work their magic.

Only a week later, Moon Tyrant launched their new album, Future Superhuman, mixed and mastered at Luwan Rock. The guys, along with Friend or Foe, Dragon Pizza and Weghur, put on a great show at YYT. They really got into some cool costumes that included lots of silver face/body paint. Here’s singer, Ivan, looking gruesome -

And then last weekend was the AM444 launch at Shelter. I didn’t make it to the event but Jake Newby just alerted me to the fact that you can listen to it online here. I had nothing to do with this album but don’t let that stop you listening. It’s really tasty.

B4B cover 1

This weekend sees the final Luwan Rock release for 2011 first quarter – Break For Borneo’s Life Gets In The Way. This album was made over two periods – the first batch of four songs completed around a year ago and the second batch of five wrapped up in December. I really like this record a lot and find the songs quite infectious. I guess that’s going to happen after listening to anyone’s music a few hundred times. See if it works for you – download it for free and then come and sing along at their show at Yuyintang on Saturday night along with a heap of other bands and DJs including Duck Fight Goose, Boys Climbing Ropes, Rainbow Danger Club and Acid Pony Club. (BTW I know what the new cover is. I merely used that image above to alude to the fact that they’re making a new cover for the album, as it’s actually been available for a while on the bandcamp page with an older, soon-to-be-replaced cover.)

So what’s next? I’m currently working really closely with The Fever Machine to complete their full length record in the coming months after working with them last year on some demos and doing sound for them at many shows. Dan Shapiro and I recently did some vocal sessions at Simply Sound near Suzhou Creek. It’s a great facility and comes highly recommended from both of us. Here’s some action shots courtesy of drummer, Miguel.

And when the Fever Machine’s album is done, I’m looking to start work on the second album of my favourite band named after a large, extinct reptile-like thing.

Free Rock and Pairs’s Manifesto

pairs etc live bar feb26th

Too good to pass up, this Saturday night sees all your favourite local/laowai bands playing for FREE at Live Bar. Amongst the bill is Pairs, whose  7″ vinyl was flung my way late last week. I am so stoked. Speaking of Pairs, they would like to debunk any mysticism associated with being in a band and making music. To that end they have published an open invitation for YOU, the members of the public to attend their rehearsals, soundchecks and even to join them on stage. You can read it in English and Chinese here.

In other Luwanrock news, there’s a veritable buzz of excitement around the studio as both the Moon Tyrant and the Rainbow Danger Club albums near completion. I’m looking forward to some CD launches in the coming weeks. \m/ \m/

Another Saturday night, another night of rock at Yuyintang

forf moon tyrant fearless Moon Tyrant are my latest clients – I began working with them on their new album a few weeks ago. This was meant to be their record launch but I’m glad it’s not. I am looking forward to seeing them as I haven’t yet had the pleasure, despite becoming quite intimate with their tunes. It’s a kind of classic-rock/metal hybrid with a few nice melodic highlights and groovy bass lines in amongst the growly vocals and sharp riffs provided by Murray the Tasmanian. I believe they’ll be on last on Saturday night, after the pleasant metal stylings of Fearless. Also appearing is X is Y and a band that just doesn’t get mentioned enough on Luwanrock - Friend or Foe. They have a new line of stickers out that you should get your hands on. Happy Turkey Day.

RDC reviewed by Ivan the Tyrant

rainbowdangerclub

As you’re no doubt aware, Rainbow Danger Club have just released The New Atlantis E.P. I think it’s a terrific collection and I wanted to review it but that seemed a bit weird because I also mastered it. Never fear, Ivan from Moon Tyrant has done a great review of it here. You can listen or download the E.P. here. Ivan is also responsible for the Firefly illustration. Top work all round.
