Album crazy

Apologies for the lack of posts recently. It seems that most of my time these days is spent either attending album launches or ensuring that the album to be launched makes it to said launch.

Rainbow Danger Club’s new album, Where Maps End (download here), left the Luwan Rock mastering suite in late February and was released unto the world a few weeks later with a great show at Live Bar. I was doing sound that evening and I received some compliments but honestly I didn’t do very much. Most of the EQ knobs (the green ones) spent the evening turned to the left – anything else produced feedback. You can see it in the only photo I took that evening. The idea is that you photograph the desk or write down the settings as they change between the bands. I just stood back and let the bands work their magic.

Only a week later, Moon Tyrant launched their new album, Future Superhuman, mixed and mastered at Luwan Rock. The guys, along with Friend or Foe, Dragon Pizza and Weghur, put on a great show at YYT. They really got into some cool costumes that included lots of silver face/body paint. Here’s singer, Ivan, looking gruesome -

And then last weekend was the AM444 launch at Shelter. I didn’t make it to the event but Jake Newby just alerted me to the fact that you can listen to it online here. I had nothing to do with this album but don’t let that stop you listening. It’s really tasty.

B4B cover 1

This weekend sees the final Luwan Rock release for 2011 first quarter – Break For Borneo’s Life Gets In The Way. This album was made over two periods – the first batch of four songs completed around a year ago and the second batch of five wrapped up in December. I really like this record a lot and find the songs quite infectious. I guess that’s going to happen after listening to anyone’s music a few hundred times. See if it works for you – download it for free and then come and sing along at their show at Yuyintang on Saturday night along with a heap of other bands and DJs including Duck Fight Goose, Boys Climbing Ropes, Rainbow Danger Club and Acid Pony Club. (BTW I know what the new cover is. I merely used that image above to alude to the fact that they’re making a new cover for the album, as it’s actually been available for a while on the bandcamp page with an older, soon-to-be-replaced cover.)

So what’s next? I’m currently working really closely with The Fever Machine to complete their full length record in the coming months after working with them last year on some demos and doing sound for them at many shows. Dan Shapiro and I recently did some vocal sessions at Simply Sound near Suzhou Creek. It’s a great facility and comes highly recommended from both of us. Here’s some action shots courtesy of drummer, Miguel.

And when the Fever Machine’s album is done, I’m looking to start work on the second album of my favourite band named after a large, extinct reptile-like thing.

Rocktober \m/ \m/

This month sees a bunch of gigs and a great opportunity to buy some new gear.

First up is the Music China Expo, running next week from Tuesday to Friday. This gear show is for retailers, manufacturers etc. more than musicians. However, past years have shown that most exhibitors are very happy to give some good discounts on their wares. It’s at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre at 2345 Longyang Lu in Pudong. It’s a 5-10 minute walk from the metro station (lines 2 & 7). Google maps link. Last year there were at least six enormous halls filled with musical instruments and related stuff so it’s a perfect time to buy if you’re in the market and you can get down there on a weekday.

b4batlune

Thursday 14th sees a gig from old Luwanrock favourites, Break For Borneo. They are playing a set (or 2?) at the new Lune venue of Xinle Lu. B4B gigs are a rare treat these days so if you haven’t seen them in a while, or at all, I thoroughly urge you to get down there and check them out. It’s great reggae grooved pop with sweet sweet harmonies, a smattering of rapping and lots of ukelele.

fevermachine and friends 16.10

Saturday 16th sees another installment of The Fever Machine and Friends with an undeniably great line-up. Toshi and Misuzu’s latest outfit, The Instigation, will open proceedings with their (surprise, surprise) garage-punk stylings. They will be followed by the awesome hypno-minimal-tripout-rock of Rainbow Danger Club, who, by the way, are finishing up an EP soon. Duck Fight Goose are in the penultimate position with their self described Death Ray Rock. No doubt they will also play minimalist inspired tunes with jerky rhythms and lots of technology and giving the audience a lot of aural pleasure.  They also have a record coming out very soon, produced Brad Ferguson. Headlining the show is the tight three piece, The Fever Machine. After all the experimentalism and post rock of the previous two bands it’ll be great to have some straight-up, four four riff rock. There will be verses, choruses, intros, riffs, breakdowns, solos and all the other things you’ve been craving. YESSSS!!

jzfestlogo

The JZ Festival is on for the whole of next weekend too – schedule here. There’s a bunch of good stuff on over both days including Theo Croker’s Afrosonic Orchestra featuring China Moses, Anna Hughes and The Red Groove Project on the Saturday. And if you get there early on Sunday you can see me performing with 666, the kid’s ensemble that I run at JZ School. The festival is again taking place at the beautiful Century Park in Pudong. Last year the weather was great and it made for a really good way to spend a Sunday. Just remember to take a jacket for later. Also of note is that Antidote is putting together the electronic stage this year. That means B6, Ben Huang with Theo Croker, Sacco and more.

In the next installment: Daniel Hart and Halloween.

Around the Studios with Danny Rogue

Dan Shapiro over at cityweekend.com has written a piece about recording studios in Shanghai. Lu Wan Rock came out of it very nicely. Thanks a lot, Dan. As well as doing Stegosaurus?’s new record, we begun sessions last night on a new EP for Break for Borneo. Things are going well.  I’m just unsure of whether or not I want my work to be the soundtrack to tales of “backdoor tranny love”. Uuhhh. . .  yeah, why not.

The Year of the Lion @ Mao – Friday 29th Jan

lionspuxiflyer

Friday night was a hugely successful party at Mao featuring the Lions of Puxi in the headlining slot  with support provided by the lovely Break For Borneo and my semi-serious project, The Violent Phlegms. Break for Borneo sounded great – I want to hear them more often through sound systems of that caliber rather than through the tiny PAs at Kaiba or Urban. Their reggae grooves were loose and silky and everyone who caught their set was entranced and impressed.

My band, a mere Violent Femmes tribute band was very well received. The audience response was humbling, especially considering they’re all songs that I never wrote. (photo by Thomas Wayne)

And of course there were the Lions. F&ck me they’re tighter than a nun’s *&^%. Last week I mentioned that the only thing I could fault them on is being too good. Now I’d like to take that back. I can’t fault them on it – they are just excellent. They are not running along the leading edge of the avant-garde. They are not playing anything in funny time signatures or weird poly-tonal keys. They are just playing very damn solid, danceable reggae. They are providing a party atmosphere and they do it so well. Guathier and Gilbert provide an excellent twin attack from the centre of the stage and they are ably backed up by a team of thousands… ok, there were seven other people on stage besides them – it still looks pretty busy up there. Big thanks and pats on the back to Nate and Carl and their organising abilities to pull it off. The night was a big production and , Mao was busy with a guestimated more than 400 people through the door. If you missed the Lions this time round, then next time is a must. And if you missed the Phlegms, well, that might’ve been your last chance…

Lions, Borneo and my band + Saturday night shennanigans

lionspuxiflyer

Here’s a big heads up – this Friday sees the unexpected return to the stage of Shanghai’s first and only Violent Femmes tribute show.  Yeah – me, Dave and Fabi are reforming our one-off concept band to support the Lions of Puxi. Also on the bill are my good friends, Break for Borneo. As reported three stories below this, the only fault I can put on the Lions i that they are too good. If you like reggae and feel like a little dance, come down to Mao on Friday night. 570 Huaihai Xi Lu near Hongqiao Lu.

trashflyer

And if that’s not enough excitement for you, Saturday night at Logo will be the crazy TrashAGogo, presented by Toshi, formerly of The Snots and The Dropkicks and currently of the Beat Bandits. Appearing at TrashAGogo will be the aforementioned Bandits as well as your good friend and mine, DJ Danny Rogue, and a long awaited reappearance of The Dudettes featuring me on the guitar. The Dudettes will deliver another seething dose of topical in drag. Now I just need to work out a way to get to the Boys Climbing Ropes EP launch at YYT and still not be late for Logo.

Jing’an (acoustic tropical) Rock

shanghai’s (and possibly all of asia’s) best acoustic tropical rock band, break for borneo, played a great show at urban on jiaozhou lu last night. they are starting a residency there every thursday night from 6-9. i am starting to believe that you should keep up with B4B to find all the belgian beer in shanghai. their last residency was at kaiba, a  bar specialising in the belgian liquid gold. i expect to see them soon at di shui dong where i believe vedett and duvel are available.

B4B1

last night was also special on account of the birthday of adam, co-singer/guitarist in the band. happy birthday, dude.

adam

adam was rocking with his new vox amp that he purchased a few weeks ago on jinling lu. it’s a tiny little bugger but it managed to cut through the mix quite nicely. well done on a good show, nice harp playing, becca!

Break for Borneo – Kaiba

originally posted may 24

break for borneo flyer

tucked away in that little nook off kangding lu is kaiba. they sell belgian beer.

did you hear that? they sell belgian beer. heaps of it.

and as if that wasn’t enough enticement for you, thursday evenings at beer o’clock (6.30-8.30) there is a great new band playing called break for borneo. they describe themselves as acoustic tropical rock .

B4B

the vocals and songwriting are shared by two good friends of mine – adam and becca. just like the beatles, the writer of the song takes the lead vocals and the other will harmonise. and their voices blend beautifully with adam usually taking the lower part.

the rhythm section consists of mike on the upright bass and zac on percussion and good vibes. these guys are tight. with their solid grooves they take these great songs up to the next level.

B4B mike zac

becca is also the singer and songwriter in the dovetail joints and break for borneo is the perfect outlet for her to play some of her other songs that are less suited to the dtjs. and a great opportunity for her to play with another excellent singer and songwriter in adam. there is a lot of overlap in their individual styles and the result is a light breezy pop that makes you want to smile and drink more belgian beer. they draw largely on reggae and country, and they remind me a lot of an excellent australian band called the waifs .

B4B zac adam becca

they have one more week left of their residency at kaiba before a break for the summer. so let’s get some duvel – see you at 6.30pm on thursday 28th. 528 kangding lu near xikang lu.
