man, last night was sick. all the work we did in preparing some of our rockin material for acoustic guitars really paid off. we played really well. the crowd really dug what we did. it was a great night.

if you’re not sure what the hell i am talking about, my band, the rogue transmission, played an intimate show last night at anar bar on xingfu lu. we billed it as an evening with the rogue transmission. the original idea was to approach like the old MTV unplugged series. so we stripped down our tunes, slowed some of them down a little, some of them a lot, and we gave a few of them a bit of the psychedelic treatment:

apathetic mutation is always a crowd favourite, probably due to its catchy chorus (oooooooooooooooh). we slowed that one down and gave it a little country vibe. wicked devil heart stayed about the same speed but we gave it the old train feel (

). one of my favourites was firecracker cherrypop. it’s an older number that was starting to lose its lustre. so we gave it the power-ballad treatment and ended up bearing a strange likeness to

. not bad.

anyway, let’s get on with the pics. ben botiller of the snotrockets and the dropkicks supported us with a ‘folk’ set. i think that means that he played acoustic guitar. he’s really good – i’ve never heard him sing like that before. when he sings in the snots it’s all a lot faster and louder and… less ‘folky’.

Hotter than freakin Teppanyaki!!
ok, so i added the ‘freakin’. i love Hotter than Teppanyaki . it’s hard to capture in words what makes them so special… but i am going to try.

there’s usually six of them on stage. sometimes four, sometimes even up to seven or eight. between the six of them they play drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, trumpet, shakers, flute, ukelele, djembe and accordian. i might have forgotten something. the instument swapping vibe is really fun and is just one factor that contributes to a party atmosphere in the room. estel and helena shake and dance whilst singing about guacamole as an indoor sport. sandra’s trumpet rings out above the organised chaos. dave handles the mic like a pro and commands the stage. basically it’s a big party – and we’re all invited.

now all this might sound a little too chaotic. but nah, they’re really tight and the songs are all so catchy and memorable. check this band out.

their youtube channel . not much help to those of us behind the firewall.

anar is a cool venue. the sound is great. and i’m playing there on thursday with the rogues for a very special, one night only kinda affair. i hired a lovely acoustic guitar yesterday. i’m excited.
