Jing’an (acoustic tropical) Rock

shanghai’s (and possibly all of asia’s) best acoustic tropical rock band, break for borneo, played a great show at urban on jiaozhou lu last night. they are starting a residency there every thursday night from 6-9. i am starting to believe that you should keep up with B4B to find all the belgian beer in shanghai. their last residency was at kaiba, a bar specialising in the belgian liquid gold. i expect to see them soon at di shui dong where i believe vedett and duvel are available.

last night was also special on account of the birthday of adam, co-singer/guitarist in the band. happy birthday, dude.

adam was rocking with his new vox amp that he purchased a few weeks ago on jinling lu. it’s a tiny little bugger but it managed to cut through the mix quite nicely. well done on a good show, nice harp playing, becca!

tucked away in that little nook off kangding lu is kaiba. they sell belgian beer.
did you hear that? they sell belgian beer. heaps of it.

and as if that wasn’t enough enticement for you, thursday evenings at beer o’clock (6.30-8.30) there is a great new band playing called break for borneo. they describe themselves as acoustic tropical rock .
the vocals and songwriting are shared by two good friends of mine – adam and becca. just like the beatles, the writer of the song takes the lead vocals and the other will harmonise. and their voices blend beautifully with adam usually taking the lower part.
the rhythm section consists of mike on the upright bass and zac on percussion and good vibes. these guys are tight. with their solid grooves they take these great songs up to the next level.
becca is also the singer and songwriter in the dovetail joints and break for borneo is the perfect outlet for her to play some of her other songs that are less suited to the dtjs. and a great opportunity for her to play with another excellent singer and songwriter in adam. there is a lot of overlap in their individual styles and the result is a light breezy pop that makes you want to smile and drink more belgian beer. they draw largely on reggae and country, and they remind me a lot of an excellent australian band called the waifs .
they have one more week left of their residency at kaiba before a break for the summer. so let’s get some duvel – see you at 6.30pm on thursday 28th. 528 kangding lu near xikang lu.

what are the people saying?
